The Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Ghana's Central Region has received a significant donation from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. On December 12, 2024, a new mental health facility was handed over to the hospital, complete with essential equipment such as hospital beds, office furniture, and medical devices.
Elder Isaac K. Morrison participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the facility on December 13, 2024. The hospital had previously struggled with a small mental health care area that could not meet the growing demands of the local population. The old clinic offered services for behavioral disorders, substance abuse, psychosis, dementia, depression, and other conditions but was inadequate due to increasing patient numbers.
The Church responded to the hospital's request for assistance by constructing a dedicated building for mental health services and equipping it with necessary tools. Elder Morrison emphasized the Church's commitment to supporting mental health care during his remarks at the ceremony.
“As we gather here today, we are not just inaugurating a new facility; we are bearing witness to the Saviour’s love and concern for the mental and emotional well-being of His children," he stated. "This psychiatry unit is a tangible representation of the Church’s commitment to exemplify the Saviour’s love and to provide hope, comfort, and healing for those who are struggling.”
The Regional Director of Health Services expressed gratitude on behalf of various health authorities in Ghana: “On behalf of the Director General of the Ghana Health Services, the Regional Health Director, and the Minister Health Directorates we say a very big thank you to the Latter-day Saints Church ... This is more than humane; this is also godly.” She assured that efforts would be made to maintain the facility well and hoped for continued collaboration between the Church and hospital.
The Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital functions as a government-run referral center for other regional healthcare facilities and serves as an essential provider of mental health services in its area.
