The Strengthening Families Conference (SFC), an annual event organized by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, took place on June 26-27, 2025, at the Bintumani International Convention Center in Freetown, Sierra Leone. This year's theme was "Building Stronger Families within Communities Through Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection."
Her Excellency Dr. Fatima Maada Bio received an award from Elder Kyungu for her contributions to championing families, women, and children. The conference aimed to promote measures to maintain and strengthen families as fundamental societal units.
Organized with the Office of the First Lady of Sierra Leone, the conference featured keynote addresses, presentations, and panel discussions on family unity and moral values. It brought together experts from various backgrounds to address global cultural issues.
Dr. Fatima Maada Bio has engaged with the Church through visits and hosting Church leaders, maintaining a strong relationship that contributed to this year's SFC becoming a significant national event.
Elder Kenneth Pambu introduced the conference theme by stating: “We know that when women play a key role in families’ lives, we empower them and they are also empowered.” The Honorable Paramount Chief Sheku Amadu Tejan Fsuluku-Sonsiama III emphasized the importance of strengthening family units for societal progress.
Adward Tamba Sharles addressed challenges such as social media's influence on family life. He expressed hope for strong recommendations favoring family strengthening.
Elder Isaac K. Morrison highlighted mothers' roles as sacred trusts: “When women are spiritually strong, homes and even nations become places of peace and safety.” He praised his wife Hannah for her leadership in mission work.
Guest of Honor Madame Bio discussed women's empowerment as justice rather than charity: “Empowered women are often the fiercest protectors of children.” She urged support for women-led initiatives and legislation considering children's needs.
The second day focused on child protection with speakers addressing dangers like sexual exploitation. Elder Alfred Kyungu advocated for non-violent discipline methods based on biblical interpretations emphasizing guidance over aggression.
Elder Kyungu announced plans for a safe house in Kono, Sierra Leone—a project aligning with Madame Bio's long-held dream—expected to be completed in eight months under Ministry management.
Following these remarks, Elder Kyungu presented Madame Bio with a sculpture recognizing her work promoting family values. A thank-you dinner celebrated key participants' contributions to SFC's success with cultural celebrations fostering relationships among attendees.
The torch for next year's SFC was passed to Liberia representatives who will host it in June 2026.
