Groundbreaking ceremonies have been announced for new temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Philippines and England, with details also revealed for a temple site in Alabama.
In Tacloban City, Philippines, a groundbreaking ceremony took place on January 18, 2025. Elder Michael B. Strong, Second Counselor in the Philippines Area Presidency, led the event. In his dedicatory prayer, he expressed hopes for increased "charity, compassion, patience and kindness" among those in the temple district. Elder Strong reflected on the church's growth since its early days in Tacloban when missionaries first arrived in 1968.
"This house of the Lord will be built on a 6.99-acre site located at Tacloban Bypass Road Brgy. Utap-Caibaan," he said about the new temple which is planned to be a two-story building covering approximately 21,407 square feet.
Church President Russell M. Nelson announced this temple during an October 2021 conference emphasizing its role in strengthening faith and spiritual fortitude.
The church has nearly 870,000 members across almost 1,300 congregations in the Philippines and has experienced rapid growth since missionary work began there officially in 1961.
In Birmingham, England, groundbreaking services are scheduled for March 22, 2025. Elder Scott D. Whiting will preside over this event at a site located at Penns Lane in Sutton Coldfield. The plans include constructing a one-story temple with patron housing and arrival facilities.
President Nelson had announced this project during an April 2022 conference highlighting spiritual growth through worship at temples.
This will be the third temple in the United Kingdom alongside existing ones near London and Preston. Historically significant numbers of British converts emigrated to join church communities in America during the late nineteenth century.
