Church expands missionary roles for single seniors over age 40

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced new opportunities for single members aged 40 and older to serve as full-time missionaries. This initiative, effective from November 1, 2024, aims to utilize the unique talents and experiences of more church members globally.

According to the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, single men over 40 without dependent children at home are now eligible to be called as full-time senior missionaries. These individuals may receive assignments in various roles such as area and mission offices, family history work, or other positions that align with their life experiences in fields like medicine or law.

"Similar to most single senior sisters," these male missionaries "will be devoted to their individual area of responsibility and will not serve in a companionship." The duration of service for these missionaries can range from six months up to 23 months.

For single women aged 40 and older, the range of missionary assignments has also been broadened. Beyond existing roles supporting local church units and advising on medical matters, new potential assignments include working at visitors' centers, historic sites, employment centers, and additional roles within area and mission offices.

To qualify for these missions, candidates must meet the Church's health and financial requirements. Full-time senior missionaries are expected to dedicate 40 or more hours per week while living away from home.

Bishops have the ability to initiate missionary recommendations through the Missionary Recommendation System. Further information about these expanded service opportunities is available at SeniorMissionary.ChurchofJesusChrist.org.
