Church announces dates for Auckland and Toronto temples

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced the schedule for the open house and dedication of the Auckland New Zealand Temple, as well as the open house and rededication of the Toronto Ontario Temple.

Elder Patrick Kearon of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will dedicate the Auckland New Zealand Temple on Sunday, April 13, 2025. The dedicatory session will take place at 10 a.m. NZDT and will be broadcast to all units within the temple district. Prior to this, a media day is scheduled for Monday, February 24, 2025. Invited guests will have tours on February 25 and 26, with public tours available from February 27 to March 22, excluding Sundays.

President Russell M. Nelson announced this temple in October 2018. He stated, “If you have reasonable access to a temple, I urge you to find a way to make an appointment regularly with the Lord — to be in His holy house — then keep that appointment with exactness and joy.” He added that such sacrifices would bring needed miracles.

This new temple will be New Zealand's third. The Hamilton New Zealand Temple was dedicated in 1958 as the first in the southern hemisphere. The Wellington New Zealand Temple was announced in April 2022.

New Zealand's Latter-day Saint community began growing significantly during the 1880s when many Maori saw missionaries' efforts as fulfilling prophecies by Maori prophets. The Book of Mormon was published in Maori in 1889. Today, nearly 118,000 members reside across almost 230 congregations.

In Canada, President Jeffrey R. Holland will rededicate the newly renovated Toronto Ontario Temple on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. EDT. This event will also be broadcast within its district.

A media day is planned for February 10 before invited guest tours on February 11 and February 12. Public tours are set from February 13 to March 8 (excluding Sundays).

Originally dedicated by President Gordon B. Hinckley in August 1990 as Canada's second temple at that time, today it stands among eleven temples nationwide.

Missionary work commenced with Joseph Smith Sr., alongside his son Don Carlos north of St. Lawrence River back in September1830; between then till1850 about2 ,500 Canadians joined church ranks while now over200 ,000 members spread across nearly500 congregations call it home .
