St. Elizabeth Healthcare has received a 3-star rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) for its performance in isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and isolated mitral valve replacement and repair (MVRR) surgeries. This recognition places the organization among a select group of cardiothoracic surgery programs in the United States and Canada.
The 3-star rating is awarded based on superior outcomes in surgical quality, patient safety, and risk-adjusted results over a three-year period. According to St. Elizabeth Healthcare, fewer than 10% of participating programs achieve this distinction in both categories.
“These ratings validate the precision, collaboration and dedication that define our surgical program,” said Dr. Mario Castillo-Sang. “Our patients trust us with their lives, and we take that responsibility seriously – with every procedure, every day.”
The STS Adult Cardiac Surgery Database includes over 95% of adult cardiac surgeries performed in the U.S. The rating system uses statistical analysis that adjusts for patient risk factors, providing a measure of true surgical performance.
The star ratings are determined by evaluating specific procedures performed by each participant in the STS Adult Cardiac Surgery Database. These ratings are based on each hospital’s unique patient population and procedure volume. Only those meeting data completeness requirements during the reporting period are scored and publicly reported. St. Elizabeth Healthcare participates voluntarily in STS public reporting, reflecting its commitment to transparency and ongoing quality improvement. Ratings can be viewed at STS Public Reporting.
St. Elizabeth Healthcare operates six facilities and more than 172 primary care and specialty office locations across Northern Kentucky, Southeastern Indiana, and Greater Cincinnati.
