President Dallin H. Oaks has been named the 18th president and prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, following the passing of President Russell M. Nelson on September 27, 2025. The announcement was made during a live broadcast from Salt Lake City, Utah, on October 14, 2025. President Oaks was sustained and set apart earlier in the day.

In the leadership transition process of the Church, the First Presidency is dissolved upon the death of the prophet. The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, led by the longest-serving Apostle, assumes leadership responsibilities and confirms the new prophet through revelation and priesthood authority.

President Oaks, age 93, has called President Henry B. Eyring, age 92, and President D. Todd Christofferson, age 80, to serve as First and Second Counselors in the First Presidency, the highest governing body of the Church. Jeffrey R. Holland, age 84, will serve as President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

President Dallin H. Oaks has served as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles since May 1984. He previously served as president of Brigham Young University from 1971 to 1980 and as a justice of the Utah Supreme Court from 1980 until his resignation in 1984 to accept his calling to the apostleship.

President Henry B. Eyring has served as a counselor to three previous presidents: Russell M. Nelson (2018–2025), Thomas S. Monson (2008–2018), and Gordon B. Hinckley (2007–2008). He became a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in April 1995 and previously led Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho.

President D. Todd Christofferson joined the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in April 2008 after serving in the Presidency of the Seventy. Before his full-time church service, he worked as associate general counsel for NationsBank Corporation (now Bank of America) in Charlotte, North Carolina, and as senior vice president and general counsel for Commerce Union Bank of Tennessee.

President Jeffrey R. Holland served as Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles from November 2023 to September 2025 and has been an Apostle since June 1994. Before his call as a General Authority in 1989, he was president of Brigham Young University.

The new First Presidency will lead a global faith with more than 17 million members.
