After a 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck Cebu, Philippines on October 2, 2025, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints mobilized its members and resources to support relief efforts in the affected areas. The earthquake, which was followed by more than 20 aftershocks, caused widespread damage across several provinces in Central and Eastern Visayas, according to reports from the Philippine government and national media.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that the tremor led to structural damage, landslides in mountainous regions, and the collapse of several buildings. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) indicated that there were dozens of fatalities, hundreds of injuries, and thousands of families displaced as a result. Damage to infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and power lines has hindered rescue and relief operations. Local governments have declared states of calamity in Cebu and neighboring provinces, allowing emergency funds to be used for relief distribution.

Within the Church community, thousands of Latter-day Saint members were directly affected by the disaster. While some sustained minor injuries, over a thousand were evacuated to safer areas due to damaged homes. Church leaders confirmed that all full-time missionaries in the region are safe and accounted for. Several Church meetinghouses are being used as evacuation centers, providing shelter for hundreds of residents who continue to experience aftershocks.

Church members in Cebu have contributed to relief efforts despite their own hardships. They have donated hot meals, water, hygiene kits, tents, tarpaulins, and other essential supplies through local Church stakes that established relief centers. Hundreds of volunteers, including youth and young single adults, helped repack and distribute relief goods to affected families.

The Church is continuing its assessment of local needs in coordination with government and community partners to ensure that food, water, sanitation, and other urgent necessities reach those in need. Local leaders expressed their appreciation for members’ willingness to help others despite experiencing personal loss themselves.

Members requiring assistance are encouraged to contact their local bishop or branch president.

For many years, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has participated in humanitarian work worldwide during natural disasters, civil unrest, and other emergencies, providing both immediate relief—such as food, water, clothing, and medical supplies—and longer-term recovery support.
