Memorial held for victims of tragic accident involving church members in Lesotho

The Africa South Area Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has released a statement following a tragic accident that claimed the lives of 10 members from the Maputsoe Lesotho Branch and their two drivers. The incident occurred on June 21, 2025, near Maputsoe while they were traveling to a Church Young Women activity. Government authorities have confirmed the identities of those who perished.

The victims include Sebongile Bongi Moteletsane, Nthabiseng Motabola, Lerato Lets’ase, Masechaba Komane, Nthabeleng Francina Lebina, Omphile Denise Lephakha, Realeboha Matsau, Nthabiseng Posholi (branch Young Women president), Sharin Molaoa Lieketso (branch Young Women presidency counselor), Tephane Victor Mokhakala, Poloko Sekhonyana, Mokhethi Molateli (wife of the branch president), Daniel Molateli (branch president), Majobo Agie Moteletsane and Itumeleng Ntoane.

A memorial service took place on July 16 to honor those who lost their lives. The Church plans to hold a joint funeral service on July 19 with individual graveside services following as per families' wishes. Support continues to be extended to all affected families by The Church.

The Africa South Area Presidency expressed their condolences: "We extend our love and heartfelt condolences to the families and friends who are grieving." They also acknowledged global support: "We are grateful for the love and concern from people around the world for all who are affected by this tragedy."

During the memorial service in Lesotho, family members shared tributes about their loved ones. A young survivor testified: “I know that God is here with us even in this saddest moment because He loves us.” Dignitaries from Lesotho attended and offered words of comfort.
