Groundbreaking set for Tampa Florida Temple on August 23

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced the groundbreaking date for the Tampa Florida Temple. The ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, August 23, 2025, with Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles presiding over the event.

The temple will be a single-story structure covering approximately 29,000 square feet and will be built on a 12-acre site located at 9445 Camden Field Parkway in Riverview, Florida. The announcement for this temple was made by Church President Russell M. Nelson during the April 2022 general conference. At that time, he stated, “Positive spiritual momentum increases as we worship in the temple and grow in our understanding of the magnificent breadth and depth of the blessings we receive there.”

Florida's history with the Latter-day Saint community dates back to 1897 when the first congregation was established in the Big Bend region. Currently, Florida hosts more than 176,000 Latter-day Saints across nearly 280 congregations. Other temples in Florida include those in Fort Lauderdale, Jacksonville, Orlando, and Tallahassee.

Latter-day Saints view temples as sacred places of worship distinct from regular meetinghouses or chapels where Sunday services and weekday activities are held. Temples serve primarily for conducting sacred ceremonies such as marriages that unite families eternally and proxy baptisms for deceased ancestors who did not have the opportunity to be baptized during their lifetime.
