The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has donated funds to FUCAM, A.C., Mexico's leading institution in comprehensive breast cancer care, to address the shortage of breast cancer specialists in the country. This donation, made on June 19, 2025, will facilitate the training of eight national doctors in mastology.

Mexico is currently facing a significant lack of oncologists specializing in breast pathology, resulting in late diagnoses and inadequate treatments that contribute to higher mortality rates among Mexican women. The Church's contribution will enable eight physicians with backgrounds in radiology or gynecology to pursue postgraduate studies in mastology at FUCAM’s facilities in Mexico City, working alongside the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

María Luisa Guisa, general director of FUCAM, emphasized the importance of specialists who "play a crucial role in early detection and diagnosis," which can lead to better survival rates and improved quality of life for patients. The training program aims not only to educate new specialists but also to foster research and innovation in breast cancer treatment. The goal is for these trained professionals to eventually teach future generations of doctors.

Since 2006, FUCAM has graduated 123 specialists from its programs, including over 30 doctors from more than ten countries across Latin America. Additionally, it operates Mexico's first non-profit hospital dedicated exclusively to treating breast cancer.

In previous years, the Church has supported FUCAM by providing high-tech diagnostic equipment that has benefited over 30,000 women. Ricardo Tello, president of the Villa Coapa Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ, stated that this donation "reaffirms the Church’s commitment to the health, medical education and well-being of Mexican women."

The initiative is expected to benefit more than 16,000 people. Four radiologists and four gynecologists will specialize further in breast imaging and intervention as well as oncological surgery. Their expertise is anticipated to enhance care for approximately 8,640 patients through consultations; perform surgeries on 960 patients; conduct mammographies for 4,000 patients; provide ultrasounds for 200 patients; and carry out biopsies for another 200 patients.

The donation event was attended by Juan Alberto Tenorio, FUCAM general medical director; Jacqueline Beuchot, FUCAM director of sustainability; and Eva Ruvalcaba, deputy director of teaching and research at FUCAM.
