The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has set the groundbreaking date for the Fairbanks Alaska Temple. The ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, September 27, 2025, with Elder Peter M. Johnson, First Counselor in the North America West Area Presidency, presiding over the event.

The temple will be constructed on a 7.59-acre site along Geist Road in Fairbanks. Plans include a single-story temple covering approximately 10,000 square feet, a meetinghouse, and an ancillary building. This marks the first temple to be built in Fairbanks.

Church President Russell M. Nelson announced this project during the October 2023 general conference. At that time, he stated: “The ordinances and covenants of the temple are of eternal significance. We continue to build more temples to make these sacred possibilities become a reality in each of your lives.”

This new temple will be Alaska's second house of worship for Latter-day Saints, joining an existing temple in Anchorage that was rededicated by then-Church President Gordon B. Hinckley in February 2004.

Latter-day Saints have had a presence in Alaska since the gold rush era when members like Dr. Edward G. Cannon established early church activities using a portable "tabernacle." The first congregation was formed in July 1938, and today there are nearly 34,000 members across more than 80 congregations throughout Alaska.

Temples hold significant spiritual importance for Latter-day Saints as places where they can feel God's love and peace, learn about God's plan and gospel teachings, make promises with God and their spouses, and unite families through sacred ordinances.
