Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has embarked on a 10-day ministry in South America, starting with Montevideo, Uruguay, from June 7 to June 9, 2025. Accompanied by his wife Lesa, Elder Stevenson engaged in several outreach activities.
In Montevideo, Elder Stevenson continued the Church’s interfaith efforts by meeting Cardinal Daniel Sturla. "It was really nice to be able to share with him family values that are so deeply important to us and to visit with each other about that and to offer to him my witness of Jesus Christ as the Savior and Redeemer of the world," said Elder Stevenson.
On June 9, he met with directors at Hospital Pasteur where equipment donated by the Church is aiding patient care. Eugenio Faraldo, deputy director at Hospital Pasteur stated, “Empathy and what you offer are very important... But offering a helping hand... that’s sometimes more meaningful than overcoming a diagnosis.” Dr. Natalia Silva added her gratitude for the collaboration with the Church.
Elder and Sister Stevenson also spent time with women who knit blankets for children in palliative care. Gabriella Vega started this initiative after her grandson needed such care. "The first question I asked the sisters was, ‘Are you prepared to knit blankets for children that perhaps only live one day?’” Vega shared.
During his visit, Elder Stevenson met Uruguay Vice President Carolina Cosse discussing details about church members in Uruguay. “We had a warm conversation,” Elder Stevenson said.
Throughout their stay in Uruguay, they ministered to Latter-day Saints and appreciated their dedication. “The members’ hearts are filled with love... We certainly are in Zion here in Uruguay,” remarked Elder Stevenson.
Elder Stevenson's itinerary includes visits to Argentina and Chile where he will dedicate the Antofagasta Chile Temple on June 15.
