Salt Lake Temple renovation advances with seismic upgrades and restoration efforts

The renovation of the Salt Lake Temple, a historic landmark, continues to make progress with several key developments reported. A significant milestone is the tensioning of vertical strands inside columns that now stretch from the tops of the temple’s northeast towers down through newly constructed foundations. This marks the final phase of seismic upgrades for the temple.

Efforts are also advancing on the north addition, where detailed stonework is being completed on planters at the top level. In the sealing wing, large stones resembling cornerstones are being placed as part of sacred ordinances performed in these rooms. Sealing rooms are receiving finishing touches with doors and chandeliers crafted by skilled artisans.

Work progresses on both baptismal fonts located on the east and west sides of the temple. The east font features restored original cast-iron oxen weighing 2,200 pounds each, while new fiberglass oxen have been installed in the west font. These oxen symbolize the twelve tribes of Israel and represent gospel strength.

Restoration efforts include varnish removal from intricate paneling within circular stairways using advanced laser technology to preserve delicate woodwork without damage. Landscaping around the temple focuses on water conservation with water-efficient plants and an increase in trees by 30%.
