Church leaders express goodwill towards newly elected Pope Leo XIV

Representing The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Elder Matthew S. Holland attended the Mass of Inauguration for Pope Leo XIV at St. Peter’s Square on May 18, 2025. The event saw participation from various global religions and interfaith leaders.

Following the inauguration, Elder Holland joined other faith representatives for a private audience with Pope Leo XIV. During this meeting, he presented a congratulatory letter from the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The letter addressed to Pope Leo XIV reads: "On behalf of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we send our warmest regards upon your election as the Bishop of Rome and Supreme Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church. This vital responsibility requires great wisdom, humility, strength, and compassion. Your lifetime of faith and admirable character leave you well prepared to answer this call to serve God’s children."

The First Presidency expressed appreciation for their longstanding relationship with the Catholic Church and their joint efforts in alleviating global suffering. They look forward to continued collaboration in promoting peace, human dignity, and religious freedom.

The letter concluded with a blessing: "May the Lord guide and sustain you as you embark on this weighty new ministry that is so vital and needed in the world today."

Earlier on May 8, 2025, the First Presidency issued a statement extending prayers and greetings to Pope Leo XIV: “On behalf of the leaders and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we extend heartfelt prayers and greetings to Pope Leo XIV. This significant moment in time for the Catholic Church is a reminder of the enduring importance of faith to people everywhere.”

They emphasized their commitment to working together as followers of Jesus Christ: “As fellow followers...we look forward to continued opportunities to work together...May we strive...to care for the poor...become peacemakers and create a world where faith and goodness can flourish.”
