Church announces groundbreaking date for first temple in Singapore
Elder Kelly R. Johnson First Counselor in the Asia Area Presidency | The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has scheduled the groundbreaking ceremony for its new temple in Singapore. The event is set to take place on Saturday, June 28, 2025, with Elder Kelly R. Johnson, First Counselor in the Asia Area Presidency, leading the proceedings.

The Singapore Temple was initially announced by Church President Russell M. Nelson during the April 2021 general conference. President Nelson had previously expressed his hopes for a temple in Singapore during a visit to the city-state in November 2019.

This temple will be the first of its kind in Singapore, an island nation located in maritime Southeast Asia where the Church has maintained a presence since 1968. The local Latter-day Saint community is known for its diverse ethnic and national backgrounds, reflecting Singapore's status as a hub for commerce, education, and culture in Southeast Asia.

Currently, over 3,200 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reside across six congregations within Singapore.

Temples hold significant importance for Latter-day Saints as they are considered houses of worship and sacred places. They differ from regular meetinghouses where Sunday services and weekday activities are held and open to all. Temples primarily serve as venues for sacred ceremonies such as marriages that unite families eternally and proxy baptisms performed on behalf of deceased ancestors who did not have baptismal opportunities during their lifetimes.
