Elder Uchtdorf reflects on Christ’s final week during BYU address
Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf | The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints

Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles addressed students at Brigham Young University on April 15, 2025, in Provo, Utah, discussing expectations surrounding the last week of Jesus Christ’s life. "They were filled with eager anticipation — but were they anticipating the right things?" Uchtdorf questioned, referring to those who witnessed Christ’s entry into Jerusalem.

The followers of Christ were confused when He ended up on a cross, yet hindsight reveals His true mission. Uchtdorf noted, “Descending from the cross and saving Himself would have been impressive... But the fact that He chose to walk the winepress alone... has become the supernal witness that He is indeed the Son of God.”

Drawing from Elizabeth Pool’s 1961 book, "The Unexpected Messiah," Uchtdorf advised against harsh judgment of those puzzled by Christ's path. He encouraged viewers to use Christ's example in their lives when ideals contradict reality. “Never give up on the ideal, and don’t disregard the real. Accept both,” Uchtdorf advised.

He referenced biblical texts, Isaiah and Ecclesiastes, to promote seeing reality through a divine framework. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts higher than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:8-9) was shared as part of the inspiration.

Uchtdorf also suggested scripture study, daily prayer, and weekly worship as ways to elevate one's perspective. He concluded with reflective questions for Holy Week regarding personal relationships with Christ, asking if individuals invite Him into their lives.

“I bless you with hearts that are open... I bless you with eyes to see His miraculous power... And as one of His Apostles, I testify of His power, His love, and His tender care for each and every one of you,” Uchtdorf said.
