The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has provided key dates for upcoming events concerning two temples in South America. The Antofagasta Chile Temple will feature a media day on May 12, 2025, followed by tours for invited guests on May 13, and a public open house from May 14 to May 24, excluding Sundays. Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles is set to dedicate the Chile temple on June 15, 2025, with the session broadcast to congregations in the district.
Church President Russell M. Nelson initially announced the Antofagasta temple in April 2019. At the time, he emphasized, “God’s objective should be our objective. He wants His children to choose to return to Him, prepared, qualified, endowed, sealed and faithful to covenants made in holy temples.”
Chile hosts more than 610,000 Latter-day Saints across nearly 580 congregations, making this temple its sixth. The country’s first temple was inaugurated in Santiago in 1983. Currently, Chile has temples operational, under construction or announced in Concepción, Santiago West, Puerto Montt and Viña del Mar.
In Argentina, the Bahía Blanca Temple follows its media introduction on October 14, 2025. Tours for select guests will occur on October 14 and October 15, with a public open house scheduled from October 16 to November 1, excluding Sundays. Elder Ulisses Soares will preside over the dedication on November 23, 2025, which will also be broadcast to regional congregations.
President Nelson unveiled the Bahía Blanca temple plans during the 2020 general conference. Argentina, home to over 490,000 Latter-day Saints in more than 730 congregations, will welcome this as its seventh temple. Other temples announced or active in Argentina include Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires City Center, Córdoba, Rosario, and Salta. The Mendoza Temple was dedicated last year on September 22, 2024, by Elder Ronald A. Rasband.
Additionally, an artistic rendering has been issued for the forthcoming West Jordan Utah Temple's exterior. Announced during the April 2024 general conference by President Nelson, the temple is planned on a 16.10-acre site near State Route 111 highway and will feature a multistory building approximately 85,000 square feet in size, along with a meetinghouse.
Utah, the location of the Church's headquarters, is home to over 2.2 million members, about two-thirds of the state’s 3.5 million population. This new temple marks the 32nd within Utah's borders, adding to the numerous temples either completed, under renovation, under construction, or newly announced, such as those in cities like American Fork, Bountiful, and Cedar City, to name a few.
Latter-day Saints worship in temples to experience divine love and peace, learn about spiritual plans, establish promises with God and their spouses, and unite their families through sacred rites.
