Nairobi Kenya Temple open house begins ahead of May 2025 dedication
Thomas S. Monson Church President | The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints

An open house for the newly completed Nairobi Kenya Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has commenced. The events began with a media day on April 14, 2025. Invited guests will tour the temple on April 15 and 16, followed by a public open house running from April 17 through May 3, excluding Sundays.

Elder Ulisses Soares of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles is scheduled to dedicate the temple in one session on May 18, 2025. The dedicatory session will be broadcast to all units within the temple district. After the dedication, the temple will be open only to worthy Church members for worship and religious ordinances.

This temple was announced by former Church President Thomas S. Monson during the April 2017 general conference. As the open house approaches, Elder Thierry Mutombo remarked, “We stand amazed to see the construction of the house of the Lord here in Nairobi, Kenya." He further emphasized, “We are humbled to witness God’s love and tender mercies to bless the Saints and their families on both sides of the veil.”

The Church has a history in Kenya dating back to the baptism of its first members in 1979, with the organization of two small congregations in Nairobi and Kiboko by 1981. By 2001, the first stake was organized in Kenya, and today, the Church has over 19,200 members and three stakes in around 70 congregations. Church members have been attending the Kinshasa Democratic Republic of the Congo Temple, the nearest temple until now. The Nairobi Temple will serve members across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan.

During the open house, visitors will learn more about the temple's significance and purpose for Latter-day Saints. The temple is considered the "house of the Lord," the most sacred place for Church members. It teaches God's plan of salvation, binds families together, and supports personal spiritual growth and commitment to Jesus Christ.
