The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has revealed the location for the Retalhuleu Guatemala Temple. This new temple will be constructed on a 5.51-acre site at Km. 182.5 RN-9, Caserío Puca I, Municipio de San Sebastián, Retalhuleu, Guatemala. It marks the first temple in the city.

The announcement was originally made by Church President Russell M. Nelson during the April 2023 general conference. He emphasized, “Jesus Christ is the reason we build temples. Each is His holy house. Making covenants and receiving essential ordinances in the temple, as well as seeking to draw closer to Him there, will bless your life in ways no other kind of worship can.”

The Retalhuleu Guatemala Temple is set to become the sixth temple in Guatemala. The first temple in the country, the Guatemala City Guatemala Temple, was completed in December 1984 and stood as the first temple in Central America. The Quetzaltenango Guatemala Temple was completed in December 2011. Additionally, the Miraflores Guatemala City Guatemala Temple is under construction, and the Huehuetenango Guatemala Temple has been announced.

On June 9, 2024, the Cobán Guatemala Temple was dedicated by Elder Dale G. Renlund of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

Missionary work in Guatemala began in 1947, and there are now more than 290,000 Latter-day Saints across nearly 440 congregations in the country.

Temple ceremonies teach about life’s purpose and are designed to unite families across generations. Members commit to follow God’s commandments, support Church initiatives, live according to Christ’s teachings, remain chaste, and contribute to the growth of The Church of Jesus Christ.
