Primary General President Susan H. Porter of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently visited the Middle East, where she emphasized the role of humanitarian work in peacemaking. During her trip from February 19 to 25, 2025, she attended various conferences and met with government and faith leaders in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Jordan.
In Doha, Qatar, President Porter spoke at a conference organized by the Doha International Center for Interfaith Dialogue and the Multi-Faith Neighbors Network. She stated that "humanitarian work is a joyful part of peacemaking" and discussed how it can reduce tensions and promote stability. Highlighting the Church's motivation for humanitarian service, she said it follows Jesus Christ's commandments to love God and neighbors.
President Porter outlined two components of peacemaking: alleviating suffering and forging friendships through understanding. She cited an example from Lima, Peru, where women from different faiths created an inter-religious network to foster peace. “There was a palpable feeling of love and friendship among them,” she noted.
While in Abu Dhabi, UAE, President Porter participated in the International Dialogue of Civilizations & Tolerance Conference. Her keynote speech focused on empowering youth through secure environments and promoting tolerance at home. She praised UAE efforts in fostering respect and dialogue.
In Amman, Jordan, President Porter's visit included meetings with organizations involved in humanitarian projects supported by the Church. At Al Hussain orphanage—one such project—she observed firsthand the care provided to children aged birth to 11 years old. "Visiting this facility has been an eye-opening experience," she commented on seeing the dedication of staff members.
The Church's initiatives include treating malnutrition and improving maternal mental health care as part of its women and children's initiative launched in 2024. These efforts align with their mission to bring hope through humanitarian aid globally.
