His Excellency Julius Maada Wonie Bio, President of Sierra Leone, and his wife, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, recently hosted Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in their home on February 20, 2025. The meeting included Elder Christofferson's wife, Kathy; Elder Michael T. Ringwood from the Presidency of the Quorum of the Seventy and his wife, Rosalie; Elder Alfred Kyungu, Africa West Area President, and his wife, Lucie; along with other local Church leaders.

The first lady described the gathering as a “return match of Salt Lake versus Freetown,” referring to her recent visit to Salt Lake City. She remarked on her experience there: “I had a lasting, lasting impression of the kindness of you people.” Her husband added: “It’s good to have you here in this part of Africa. We’re truly happy to receive you.”

Elder Christofferson expressed appreciation for Sierra Leone's support for religious freedom: “I think that’s an admirable example for the world.” He praised how different faiths coexist peacefully in the country.

President Bio shared an instance where Christians and Muslims exchanged religious texts during a joint event, highlighting religious tolerance as Sierra Leone’s greatest export.

During the visit, Elder Christofferson presented President Bio with a Book of Mormon and noted that due to such religious tolerance, the Church is growing in Sierra Leone and constructing a temple in Freetown. “We’re happy that we have a temple... being constructed here in Freetown,” he said.

Elder Christofferson also discussed humanitarian projects by the Church in Sierra Leone, including clean water initiatives and education programs. He reflected on First Lady Fatima Maada Bio's visit to Brigham Young University and expressed hope for expanding educational programs like BYU–Pathway Worldwide in Sierra Leone.

The meeting concluded with gratitude from Elder Christofferson towards Dr. Fatima Maada Bio for supporting the 2025 Strengthening Families Conference hosted by her country. She has been active in advocating for women's empowerment and child protection.

As they wrapped up their visit, guests were invited to share a meal at the presidential residence where gifts were exchanged. Among them was a replica of the Christus statue given by Elder Christofferson along with a copy of the Book of Mormon presented to President Bio.
