The Kwesimintim Government Hospital in Ghana's Western Region received a donation of medical equipment from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on January 17, 2025. This contribution aims to enhance maternal and neonatal care at the facility.
Dr. Simon Osei Frimpong, the hospital's medical superintendent, accepted the equipment which includes anesthesia machines, phototherapy machines, fetal doppler machines, an autoclave, and radiant warmers. These items are expected to improve care for mothers and newborns at the hospital, which handles about 165 deliveries monthly with around 50 caesarean sections and 40 babies requiring neonatal intensive care.
Dr. Frimpong highlighted that in 2023 the hospital struggled to acquire modern equipment and sought help from the Church. Following visits by two delegations from the Church in 2024 to assess needs, the requested equipment was delivered on October 2 of that year.
President Jacob Helland of the Ghana Takoradi Mission expressed gratitude during the donation event: "Friends and neighbours, brothers and sisters, we are honoured to associate with you today." He acknowledged community support during a cholera outbreak and emphasized that these donations were made possible through member tithes.
Honorable Fiifi Buckman, Member of Parliament for Effia-Kwesimintsim, praised the Church's commitment to community development: "The Church's actions reflect its core essence of uplifting humanity through selfless service."
Madam Joyce Bagyna, Municipal Director of Health, commended the unique funding model: “These contributions come from individual Church members... It’s impressive.” She noted that it would have been challenging for the hospital to fund this equipment independently.
Mr. Jeremiah Tiimob from the Regional Health Directorate assured attendees that maintenance plans are in place for longevity. He also recognized other healthcare contributions by the Church in the region.
Department heads at Kwesimintim Hospital shared positive feedback on how donated tools have improved healthcare delivery. The event saw attendance from dignitaries including Elder and Sister Ostler from Area Welfare Services and various Church representatives.
The hospital extended thanks to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for its ongoing support in enhancing regional healthcare services.
