Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles addressed Brigham Young University students at a devotional, emphasizing the importance of embodying Christlike attributes through metaphorical flags representing discipleship.
During his speech at BYU’s Marriott Center, Elder Stevenson drew parallels between the visual impact of flags at BYU sports events and their symbolic significance during the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. He noted how athletes from over 200 nations marched together, showcasing unity and patriotism.
“Flags are familiar, representing a full range of institutions, filled with symbolism and meaning,” said Elder Stevenson. He introduced four metaphorical flags that BYU students can wave as disciples of Jesus Christ.
The first flag is the Ensign of Peacemaker. Elder Stevenson quoted President Russell M. Nelson’s call for peacemakers and shared insights from Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s interpretation of the parable of the Good Samaritan. “A peacemaker must consider the needs of the other as much or more than their own,” he stated.
Next is the Ensign of Understanding, where Elder Stevenson emphasized gaining understanding beyond mere knowledge by practicing active listening and building bridges as taught by President Nelson. “We need to foster a fundamental respect for the human dignity of every human soul, regardless of their color, creed, or cause,” President Nelson has said.
The third flag is the Ensign of Restoration. Elder Stevenson reminded students about their unique role as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to share its message through simple acts like loving and inviting others to learn about the gospel. “Carrying the flag of Restoration means we hope to introduce its unique message to others,” he explained.
Finally, there is the Ensign of Engagement which emphasizes civic charity and public service. Elder Stevenson encouraged students to engage in good causes while following commandments to love neighbors: “As you embark on your next chapter... strive to make meaningful contributions.”
He concluded by urging students to carry these banners with enthusiasm and dignity: “Go forth proudly carrying His banner... Carry them with enthusiasm... as pure vessels.”
