The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in partnership with Construyendo Esperanzas, has announced a donation aimed at enhancing access to drinking water and food security for families in Itztazacuala, Metztitlán, Hidalgo, Mexico. This announcement was made on December 6, 2024.

The initiative involves the construction of rainwater harvesting systems and wastewater treatment facilities alongside family gardens. These developments will allow 30 families, comprising approximately 270 individuals, to have clean water in their homes and a sustainable source of food from their gardens.

Kenia Montiel Pimintel, founder of Construyendo Esperanzas, stated: “We come into communities where people want to move forward and want a better future for their children.”

For many years, Itztazacuala has struggled with shortages of potable water and inadequate sanitation. This situation has led to health problems and limited development opportunities. The new rainwater harvesting systems are expected to provide a long-term solution by ensuring families have a continuous supply of clean water.

Yufen García, a local leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said: “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints joins in solidarity as a community of faith with Construyendo Esperanza.” García added that “the Church supports projects that promote the sustainability of communities and the self-sufficiency of individuals.”

The project supported by the Church includes several components:

- Rainwater harvesting systems: Each beneficiary family will receive a 20,000-liter storage tank for year-round access to clean water.

- Gray water treatment: Systems will be installed to treat domestic wastewater, promoting environmental sustainability.

- Family gardens: Thirty gardens will be created for families to grow their own food.

- Community tank: A 100,000-liter storage tank will be constructed for the entire community's use.

This comprehensive project aims to improve health outcomes, enhance food security and foster community development through sustainable practices. Additionally, it includes training on water management, hygiene practices and healthy eating habits.
