The Light the World Giving Machines, which have facilitated numerous donations through charitable organizations since their introduction in 2017, made their debut on the African continent on November 30, 2024. The launch event took place at Sarit mall in Nairobi, Kenya. The initiative by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints aims to enable Africans to contribute to fellow Africans through these machines.
Sarit mall, recognized as East Africa's busiest shopping center with over 25,000 daily visitors, now hosts three Giving Machines. The grand opening featured a choir performance by 177 singers from around Nairobi and West Pokot County. This group included individuals who had previously benefited from the generosity facilitated by the Giving Machines.
Denis Mukasa, president of the Nairobi East Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, led the event. Mr. Sarit Shah, owner and CEO of Sarit mall, also spoke at the ceremony. He expressed his enthusiasm for hosting the machines: “Today marks a monumental milestone in Sarit’s journey — one that resonates deeply with our core values of compassion, service and community."
President Mukasa highlighted six NGOs participating in the Kenya Giving Machines: Kenya Red Cross, UNICEF, Uthabiti of Kenya, Clean Up Kenya, Church World Service, and Caritas Kenya. These organizations will distribute items donated through the machines.
Elder Christophe Giraud-Carrier and Sister Isabelle Giraud-Carrier made the first donation following the unveiling ceremony. Elder Giraud-Carrier serves as Second Counselor in the Africa Central Area Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
