The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced the establishment of a new Canada Area, aimed at enhancing leadership and support for its members across the country. This change will take effect on August 1, 2025.

The Canada Area will be formed by dividing the existing North America Central, North America Northeast, and North America West Areas. The area office and presidency, including a director for temporal affairs and other support functions, will be based in Toronto, Ontario.

“We are grateful for the Lord’s direction as His Church continues to grow across the earth,” stated the First Presidency in a letter addressed to Church leaders globally.

This new area marks the Church's 24th geographical region. In each area, a General Authority Seventy is appointed by the First Presidency to serve as Area President. Two counselors—either General Authority Seventies or Area Seventies—assist the president. The Area Presidency operates under the guidance of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

Area Presidencies located outside of the United States reside within their designated areas and frequently travel to provide teaching and support to Latter-day Saints, missionaries, leaders, temple presidents, and matrons.

Originally established in the 1980s due to significant church growth making it challenging for direct oversight by the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, Area Presidencies are strategically positioned to offer counsel and leadership tailored to local needs worldwide.
