The "Christmas in Kirtland" Nativity display is marking its 20th anniversary by expanding to two locations in Kirtland, Ohio. Previously hosted at the Historic Kirtland Visitors’ Center for 19 years, the exhibit will now also be featured at the Kirtland Temple Visitors’ Center due to increasing crowds and new heirloom Nativity donations.
The event has been recognized with various awards, including one from the national Friends of the Creche society, which focuses on preserving Nativity scene artistry. The display showcases numerous interpretations of the traditional Nativity scene featuring Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus alongside animals like sheep, camels, and donkeys. Some scenes include unconventional animals such as lions, giraffes, a hippo, a snake, and even a turtle.
Creches from over 70 countries are part of the exhibition. These include representations from South Africa, Liberia, Thailand, Germany, France, Italy, Peru, Indonesia, Rwanda, China, and India. They are crafted using diverse materials like traditional fabrics, natural elements, glass, porcelain, wood carvings, clay—and even items like a disk brake drum and shovel head.
In celebration of this milestone anniversary year interfaith communities across Ohio will participate by sharing their Christmas traditions through live musical performances held every Sunday evening throughout December.
Both exhibits will remain open until January 6. Operating hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Sunday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.; and on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The displays will not be available for viewing on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day.
