Since its founding in 1999, the Orchestra at Temple Square has become a prominent musical presence, performing at the Tabernacle and reaching audiences worldwide. This year marks its 25th anniversary, celebrated with special performances on October 25 and 26, 2024.
During the concert, Mack Wilberg, Music Director of the Tabernacle Choir who oversees the Orchestra, expressed gratitude: "We express our profound love, admiration and appreciation for all that they have done for the past 25 years."
Julie Keyes, a harpist who has been with the Orchestra since its first concert on October 29, 1999, values her experiences with the group. "I think the most memorable experiences are with the audience," Keyes said.
Orchestra member Bill Holman shared his favorite moments from their “Songs of Hope” world tour. He said playing in renowned concert halls around the world was particularly meaningful. "Watching people’s reactions to music in places like Mexico City and the Philippines has been very special," he noted.
Director Wilberg highlighted how the Orchestra's establishment brought significant changes to the Choir's sound and repertoire. "[When] the Orchestra was established in 1999," he remarked, it helped reinvent what was possible for both groups over time.
All members of this volunteer ensemble serve as musical missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Julie Keyes recalled her initial hesitation about joining due to lack of payment but found it rewarding nonetheless.
Associate Music Director Ryan Murphy praised their dedication: "They are here because they love music and they love God." He described an uplifting atmosphere created by these committed musicians.
