Cody Wyoming Temple groundbreaking ceremony marks state's third LDS temple

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Cody Wyoming Temple took place on Friday, September 27, 2024. Elder Steven R. Bangerter, First Counselor in the North America Central Area Presidency, led the event. Elder Kevin R. Duncan, Executive Director of the Temple Department, was also present.

The ceremony was set against Heart Mountain's backdrop, where Elder Bangerter and his wife Susan joined Elder Duncan and his wife Nancy to break ground with local participants. During a dedicatory prayer at the site, Elder Bangerter expressed hopes for the community: “We ask that they may feel a spirit of peace wash over them, granting them comfort and assurance that the presence of this temple will bring added joy, prosperity, beauty and unity to their lives and their community.”

The temple is planned for construction on the northwest side of Skyline Drive at Cody Canal in Cody, Wyoming. It will be a single-story building covering approximately 9,950 square feet. This will be Wyoming's third temple; others include the Casper Wyoming Temple and Star Valley Wyoming Temple.

Elder Duncan addressed attendees during the ceremony. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has about 68,000 members in Wyoming—one in every nine residents. The state holds historical significance for the Church as pioneers traveled through it during their westward migration to Utah from the 1840s to 1860s.

Inside each temple, ceremonies teach about life's purpose and unite families across generations. Members commit to keeping God's commandments and supporting His work while living according to Christ's teachings.
