Interfaith gathering in Bolivia marks International Day of Peace

The Interfaith Gathering for Peace was held on September 20, 2024, in La Paz, Bolivia, to commemorate the International Day of Peace. This event took place at a meeting center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and involved representatives from various religious traditions such as Zen Buddhism, the Catholic Church, the Islamic community, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

During the gathering, religious leaders delivered speeches emphasizing peace and mutual understanding. Elder Carlos Velasco from Area Seventy welcomed attendees on behalf of The Church of Jesus Christ and shared insights about peace from a Christian perspective.

The Bolivian Interfaith Dialogue underscores that peace is a core value across all religions and highlights the importance of gatherings like this for overcoming differences and fostering respect among diverse faiths.

Hugo De La Fuente concluded the event by reading an Interfaith Declaration for the International Day of Peace on behalf of the Dialogue. This declaration stressed interfaith dialogue as crucial for building a cohesive and peaceful society.

Officials from several embassies including those from France, the United States, Cuba, along with government officials and national representatives attended. Their presence underscored that collaboration among different faiths can effectively promote peace amid global challenges.

The Bolivian Interfaith Dialogue was formed on September 21, 2023, by Catholic, Muslim, and Jewish communities during an event at the Metropolitan Basilica Cathedral of Our Lady of La Paz. This initiative aimed to celebrate peace while condemning violence in all forms.

Since its inception in 2023, various religious groups with significant influence in Bolivia have joined this dialogue. It continues to engage in activities promoting peace and mutual respect among different religious denominations.
