Elder Gérald Caussé has been named as the newest member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His appointment took place on Thursday, November 6, 2025, when he was ordained by President Dallin H. Oaks along with other members of the First Presidency and the Quorum.
“I’ve always had a testimony of Jesus Christ,” Elder Caussé said Thursday. “He’s always been in the center of my life. I know Jesus Christ lives. And I know He’s our Savior and Redeemer. What a wonderful thing it is to be a witness of Christ. That’s the best responsibility or stewardship we might have in our lives.”
The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles serves as special witnesses for Jesus Christ worldwide and takes on major administrative roles within the Church, operating under the direction of the First Presidency.
At age 62, Elder Caussé comes from Bordeaux, France, and has served as Presiding Bishop for eleven years before this new calling. He is noted as being only the third Presiding Bishop born outside the United States and the first whose native language is not English. The Presiding Bishopric oversees humanitarian aid, welfare programs, tithing administration, church facilities, and membership records management.
Elder Caussé's previous roles include counselor in the Presiding Bishopric from 2012 to 2015 and General Authority Seventy between 2008 and 2012.
Born May 20, 1963, to Jean Caussé and Marie-Blanche Bonnet Caussé, he moved to Paris at age nineteen for military service. He later married Valérie Babin on August 5, 1986; both are second-generation members of their faith.
The couple spoke about their experiences moving internationally due to Elder Caussé's assignments as a General Authority—first relocating to Germany with three children before settling in the United States—and praised their children for adapting to these changes.
“That was not an easy thing to do,” Elder Caussé said. “We admire them for being so consecrated. They never complained. They moved with us and changed their lives. And those who stayed in France, we admire them for not having their parents nearby for now 17 years.”
“They encouraged us,” Sister Caussé added. “One of them told us she cried every night, but she didn’t tell us anything besides encouragement. We’re so proud of them.”
In his ministry work, Elder Caussé has addressed topics relevant to young adults in his faith community and emphasized participation in what he described as "the gathering of Israel." In August 2025 he stated: “The Church needs you — not in spite of who you are, but because of who you are... Each of you brings unique gifts and life experiences that are essential to fulfilling the Lord’s purposes.”
He has also spoken about environmental stewardship within a religious context at events such as a conference in Brazil attended by young professionals: “God has entrusted us with stewardship over His creations, including that of caring for His children — our brothers and sisters... Acting in this stewardship is a way of sharing the love that our Creator extends to us."
Elder Caussé’s recent addresses have focused on hope through Jesus Christ: “This message of hope and comfort is for all of us, children of God,” he said during general conference remarks in April 2025. “None of us can escape the challenges and limitations of mortality... Yet we have a loving Savior."
